Description
The Ainu people regard land and sea as deities and animals the deities' disguise. Bears are the disguise of the mountain deity bringing meat and hides to the Ainu people.
Ainu are talented wood carvers so in the late Twentieth century when suffering poor economic growth, they turned to carving for the tourist trade. They carved what they revered most and the hand-crafted bears were popular for many years.
