Description
Wood block printing in Japan (Japanese: moku hanga) is a technique best known for its use in the ukiyo-e artistic genre which flourished during the Edo period (1603-1867).

The text or image would first be drawn onto washi (Japanese paper), and then applied to wood where the image would be hand carved. Printing is a time consuming process and requires great precision. Each layer of color was then individually pressed onto the paper.

Ukiyo-e has greatly inspired and influenced many artists such as Vincent van Gogh, James Abbott McNeill Whistler, and Claude Monet. Even today, there are vast numbers of wood block print collectors throughout the world.
