Description
Nobori, a Japanese word meaning banner, are used today to celebrate Boy's Day (May 5th, now known as Children's day) in Japan. The original use of these large banners was on the battlefields of the 16th century, signifying a troop location.

Samurai families were the first to link these banners with the birth and growth of their sons, using them for ceremonial purposes. Large painted cloth banners signified a parents' wish for their boys to be disciplined and show honor and bravery as they grow into men.
