Description
The word Gabbeh means something rough, raw, of nature. The Gabbeh we started to see in our market 10+ years ago are truly that - rugs woven by nomadic Q'ashqai tribe for personal use. They are often small (woven on looms that could knock down and travel) loosely knotted with thick yarns and piles cut high. Bright color blocks are laid out in bold abstract pattern and naive designs are used at random and often asymmetrical. Simple characters or stylized landscape help tell the weaver's personal story. These Gabbeh intrinsically show their history and we have been drawn to them since.

Kashkuli - A rug named after the sub-tribe of the Q'ashqai, are some of the finest Gabbeh in the market today. Their wool is exceptional, colors vibrant and patterns can be far more evolved than their rural cousin. The wool itself and the subsequent knots are tight, and the pile is shorn medium to short in length. They start to feel more modern and less arts & crafts. Woven in larger sizes and more advanced in their marketing, these rugs have pushed through and dominate the Gabbeh market today. They are works of art and worth their weaver's talents.
